The head waters of the Tonsina River lay high at the melting Tonsina glacier in Chugach Mounatins outside of Valdez, Alaska. The Tonsina glacier melt water drains over shallow rock into the Tonsina Lake. The Tonsina River starts at the outlet of the Tonsina Lake. The waters flow mostly easterly into the Copper River a few miles west of Chitna, Alaska. The river water can become a blue-green color as some of the glacial silt settles in the lake before it reaches the outlet. The Tonsina River has some Class III+ rapids that are in a remote portion of the float trip.
The Tonsina river is one of the best Alaska fishing rivers because of it's geographic location. It's far away from any major town or cities, not very user-friendly by foot and it's the home a large run of Copper River king salmon. It is surrounded by steep banks and vast expanses of Alaskan wilderness where it is possible to view eagles and, brown bears. and moose Rafting this stretch of the Tonsina River is a true Alaska wilderness adventure.
